Space exchange

2021 sees Museum as Muck partner on a new intergenerational mentoring programme led by Space Invaders, the campaign group of feminists in museums and heritage. The aim of Space Exchange is to skill up participants to be active agents for long-term, systemic change, empowering them to make a difference in the sector.

Mentees were selected from Museum as Muck and Museum Detox ensuring that underrepresented groups were prioritised in this first year. Mentors were recruited from the Women Leaders in Museums Network, and the cascaded group Shift, with the aim of mentees and mentors working together to claim equal space for women in our sector.

Space Exchange will help to advance mentees into senior positions and work towards the wider goal of gender equality. This mentoring scheme aims to help senior leaders to further understand the challenges facing women in the sector today, while passing on their expertise. In this partnership model, mentors will become 'thinking partners'; the learning is intended to become a two-way exchange.
