Working class British art network

In 2020 Museum as Muck partnered with TATE British Art Network and Arts Council Collection to form the Working Class British Art Network, leading research and providing a platform for artists from a working class background.

Our arts organisations do not adequately represent the talent of artists from working class backgrounds due to a long history of discriminatory practices that have disproportionately favoured middle and upper class artists. The language around working class identity is missing from our discussion of British art; many seem wary of its intangibility or the ability to ‘see’ it. The Working Class British Art Network explores how we take the language used by artists in their work to lead discussions around working class identity and pave the way for greater inclusivity.
